A new collaborative group for ICT business in the Moreton Bay region is being formed, supported by ICT industry key players such as Microsoft, IBM, and IT Queensland.
An initiative of Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay, the group is an exciting development for the Moreton Bay region’s ICT sector and aims to bring together like-minded ICT businesses who are interested in exploring the potential benefits of membership of a collaborative industry group.
Anthony Dow, Business Cluster Manager of Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay, says “with over 160 ICT businesses located in the Moreton Bay region, the third largest region in Queensland, the time is ripe for these businesses to benefit from the advantages and opportunities being part of a collaborative group presents. Now is the time for such a group with Queensland’s ICT industry worth over $29 billion and employing more than 80,000 people, and with the nearby regions of the Gold Coast and Logan having already established successful ICT networks”.
To kick off the initiative, Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay and IT Queensland partnered to jointly host a business lunch at the IBM Centre in Brisbane on 16 December 2014. Also in attendance was Moreton Bay ICT businesses, FlowBiz, MacroGIS and Physical Layer Consultancy, plus senior representatives from Microsoft, IBM, Queensland Government Digital team, NBN Co., and National ICT Australia.
The group discussed opportunities and challenges within the ICT sector and shared ideas around the formation of a collaborative ICT group in the Moreton Bay region, taking learning’s from similar networks established elsewhere in Queensland (Gold Coast, Logan and Mackay).
Key messages to emerge included:
• challenges associated with traditional reliance on volunteers to run a network;
• the need for passionate, committed leadership;
• the requirement for a clear demonstration of value and purpose; and
• using online forums to connect (www.meetup.com).
All participants agreed to support the next steps to establish an ICT Moreton Bay collaborative group.
Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay will organise an ICT Sector collaborative meeting in February 2015. This will focus on identifying and bringing together like minded ICT businesses who are interested in exploring the potential benefits of a collaborative ICT group for the Moreton Bay Region.
