FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAIR

It has been an exciting month for Regional Development Australia Moreton Bay.  Our business needs survey went live on the 1st of August and we are collecting some valuable information that will guide our plans over the next year and beyond.  You can complete the survey through until 9:00 am Monday 3 September. Click Here for SURVEY

We completed our annual business plan and budget which is being finessed and will then be submitted to the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities for final approval.  As soon as that has happened I am excited to share the key points of the plan with you.

August MBRIT Business Conference Series Lunch

steve BaxterRDA Moreton Bay partners with MBRIT in the Business Conference Series lunches and on 10 August welcomed Queensland Chief Entrepreneur and Shark from the popular Channel 10 show “Sharktank” Steve Baxter as the keynote speaker.  After his presentation Steve was joined on stage by an expert panel – Aaron Birkby, CEO Start-up Catalyst, Peter Ball, CEO, Greater Outcomes, Peta Ellis, CEO River City Labs.  It was great to see so many people in the audience taking the opportunity to ask insightful questions about innovation and start-ups of the panel.  The key message of the day was “don’t get in the way” of entrepreneurs and innovators.

Regional Development Australia National Forum

The following week, our Deputy Chair Noel Powell and our Director Nette Griggs attended the 2-day RDA National Forum in our national capital.  Convened by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities the National Forum provided workshops covering a range of topical and important subjects such as Facilitating Trade and Investment, Building Effective Regional Partnerships, Population challenges and Policy development.

The National Forum was opened by the Hon Dr John John McVeighMcVeigh MP, Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government, who spoke about the Federal Government’s commitment to strong local economies, high quality services, particularly in health and education and active and engaged communities.  The minister stressed the need for long-term commitment and to that end the Government strategy of decentralisation, not easy or without some problems, but achieved successfully, with the move of the Indigenous Affairs from Melbourne to Shepparton and the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to Armidale.

Attendees were challenged by future ideas and predictions in a session called “Regional Australia: 2030” where discussion centred on evolving trends and potential futures for living and working in regional Australia.  Other sessions covered Australian Government Investment in Regional Australia, facilitating innovation and leadership and building a stronger RDA network.  The forum presented great opportunities for RDA staff and Committee members to connect and exchange information with colleagues from across the country and within the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities.

Five Minutes with.. Fabian Koh

Fabian Koh smallFinally, the RDA Moreton Bay Board likes to get out into the community for our meetings.  Our July meeting was held at The Sebel, Margate Beach and the General Manager Fabian Koh gave us a tour of this fantastic new facility whilst we were there.  Our Director Nette Griggs took the opportunity to interview Fabian, a newcomer to our community and find out where he has come from to our part of the world and how he got into the hotel business.  See the interview and some pictures of The Sebel here
